Episode 18: Inspections, Minutes, and Minor Inconveniences

Something is happening at Cedar Paddock.

No official announcement has been made, but construction has begun on the other side of the White House. Hardware cloth appeared on the ground, and weed barrier cloth was laid out on top. A structure arrived and was placed in the same spot. Activity around the site has increased in ways that have not gone unnoticed by the residents.

Particularly by Beryl.

Beryl making sure things are up to code.

Beryl has taken it upon herself to conduct ongoing structural inspections of the area. These inspections occur several times a day and appear to focus on a wide range of potential concerns, including roof integrity, perimeter compliance, snack accessibility, and what she seems to believe may be several serious zoning violations.

So far, none have been confirmed.

This has not stopped the inspections.

Meanwhile, the White House has attempted to organize a series of informational meetings regarding the new construction.

Attendance has been mixed.

Margot has attended most of them.

Margot and her Fluffy Pantaloons
Margot and her Fluffy Pantaloons

Margot is a Brahma hen of considerable stature and composure. Her large feathered pantaloons give the impression that she descended from a long and distinguished family line where everything was handled with dignity and proper spacing.

Margot walks slowly, observes carefully, and generally expects the world around her to behave itself.

Unfortunately, the world occasionally fails to meet these expectations.

During the most recent gathering, Margot was forced to relocate twice due to minor but unacceptable disturbances, including a breeze, an uneven patch of grass, and Brittany arriving unexpectedly from the wrong direction.

Margot handled the situation with grace.

She simply stood, sighed with the quiet patience of someone accustomed to enduring small inconveniences, and repositioned herself somewhere more suitable for a hen of her standing.

Pantaloons first.

There was a Meeting
There was a Meeting

Brittany, on the other hand, has not successfully attended a single meeting.

Brittany is a white-crested Polish hen, which means she possesses a magnificent feathered pompadour that blocks approximately ninety-seven percent of her vision. As a result, Brittany experiences Cedar Paddock less as a continuous series of events and more as a sequence of surprising discoveries.

She Missed the Meeting
She Missed the Meeting

During the most recent meeting, Brittany arrived several minutes late, paused in the center of the gathering, and slowly rotated in a thoughtful circle while attempting to determine where everyone had gone.

The meeting had already ended.

After conducting a brief investigation of the grass and pecking thoughtfully at a leaf, Brittany wandered away in the general direction of the White House.

Later that afternoon she requested the meeting minutes.

Brittany will have to read the meeting notes.
Brittany will have to read the meeting notes.

Fortunately, Cedar Paddock does maintain a records department.

The records department is managed entirely by Khloe Kardashihen.

Khloe maintains the official minutes of

meetings, organizes complaint forms, documents incidents, and archives all notable developments occurring within Cedar Paddock jurisdiction. No one formally assigned Khloe this position. She simply began recording observations one day and has steadily expanded the system into a comprehensive administrative archive.

If something happens at Cedar Paddock, Khloe has noted it.

If it happens twice, it has been filed.

If it happens three times, there is almost certainly a folder.

Brittany has now requested the meeting minutes several times.

Khloe has recorded the request.

Elsewhere, inspections continue.

Beryl has now completed several additional perimeter walks of the construction site and has spent considerable time examining the roof as if waiting for it to admit wrongdoing.

Augustine briefly inspected several nearby objects, a basket, and the camera before determining that the situation did not currently require intervention.

Travis has conducted a quiet evening patrol of the area, which generally indicates that whatever is being built has passed at least one serious security review.

Gertie
Gertie

Gertie has issued no comment.

Which, historically, means she already understands exactly what is happening.

For now, construction continues.

Beryl continues inspecting.

Khloe continues documenting.

Brittany continues requesting the minutes.

And Margot continues observing the entire situation with calm patience, prepared to tolerate the disorder of the modern world for as long as necessary, provided she can occasionally relocate to a slightly more suitable patch of grass.

Pantaloons first.

At this point, who do you think knows what the new structure actually is?

Beryl?

Khloe?

Or Gertie, who hasn’t said a single word about it?
