Episode 6: Rooberty and Rage

The sun still hangs hot over Cedar Paddock, the air thick with the smell of dust and dry leaves. It’s the kind of Missouri autumn that glows like summer but hums with change — and in the White House pen, that change has a name.

Ricky.

Rooberty has taken hold of him like wildfire. His feathers blaze with iridescent sheen, his comb burns crimson, and every crow rips through the air with wild conviction. He struts, he paces, he throws his weight against the wire just to hear it rattle. The world, to Ricky, is one long challenge he hasn’t yet won.

Across the paddock, Travis’s low crow rolls steady and patient. Todd answers from his own yard — young, bold, and learning his rhythm. But Ricky’s voice cuts through them all, harsh and relentless. Each note a dare.

By midday, the hens have had enough of his racket. Most drift to the far side of the run. All except Tum-Tum Tillie.

Tum-Tum Tillie. Small, but Mighty
Tum-Tum Tillie. Small, but Mighty

Small, round, and covered in clouds of splash-white feathers, Tillie steps forward. She’s barely half Ricky’s size, but she walks like she owns the dirt beneath her feet.

Ricky notices. He lowers his head until his beak nearly brushes the wire, hackles flared, eyes burning with the thrill of the standoff.

Tillie stares right back. Then, without warning, she lunges.

Her beak jabs through the fence — peck, peck, peck — furious little strikes that snap the air.

Ricky jerks, surprised, then lunges in return, his beak flashing downward in a sharp, punishing blow that lands square on top of her head.

Tillie squeals — not in fear, but fury.

Tillie takes no crap.
Tillie takes no crap.

With a wild burst, she leaps straight at his face, both feet outstretched, feathers flying. Her kicks thump the wire, wings beating like thunder. Ricky strikes back, trying to meet her blow for blow, spurs scraping against the fence as sand whirls beneath them.

For a few breathless seconds, it’s chaos — the tiny silkie and the raging rooster locked in a flurry of feathers, metal, and pride.

Then, as quickly as it began, it’s over.

Ricky steps back, panting, feathers askew. Tillie lands, shakes herself out, and stands tall — or as tall as a silkie can. She stares him down one last time, gives a sharp, indignant cluck, and struts away with the triumphant wiggle of a hen who just fought a dragon and won.

Ricky watches her go, chest heaving. His crow never comes.

From the red house, Travis calls once — low, calm, final. The flock settles. Even the wind seems to sigh in relief.

Behind the wire, Ricky’s eyes still burn, but now there’s something new in them — not just rage, but confusion. For the first time, he’s met a creature he couldn’t intimidate, and she was half his size.

The paddock exhales under the soft evening light, golden and quiet. Rooberty, it seems, has met its match.
