Ricky demanding to be the Alpha

The morning after the battle, the paddock felt hollow. Feathers still clung to the grass like fallen banners. The hens moved quietly, unsure which silence to honor — the silence of fear, or the silence of relief.

Ricky was gone.Taken from the kingdom he had tried to claim, he now brooded in another coop beyond the red house, his crow echoing faintly across the pasture like a ghost of his own ambition. The walls that held him were not just wire — they were consequence.

And in the red coop, the wounded protector still stood.Travis limped when he walked, his leg trembling under the weight of his body, but he refused to yield. He greeted the dawn with a low, steady crow — not the booming command of his prime, but a promise: I’m still here.

The hens heard it and answered in kind. Augustine stayed closest, her feathers brushing his when he steadied himself. Oprah clucked soft encouragement, while Vanessa and Gertie resumed their pecking order squabbles as if to remind the world that life carried on. The kingdom, though shaken, had not fallen.

Each day, Travis made his rounds. He tidbitted when he found seeds, herded the hens from shadows, and stood guard at dusk. The limp never left him, but neither did his pride. When a hawk’s cry split the sky, Travis was the first to look up — chest lifted, ready to fight again if it came to that.

From his distant coop, Ricky could see the flock through the gaps in his pen. He crowed each morning — loud, defiant — as if to say he hadn’t been forgotten. But his cries carried no authority now, only longing. Leadership, he was learning, was more than dominance. It was endurance.

And so the days went on — one rooster mending, one rooster waiting. The hens moved between them like whispers between two worlds: the present they trusted, and the future they feared.

The paddock slept each night under Travis’s careful watch, but in the still hours before dawn, another crow would answer from the far coop — raw, restless, and rising.

The kingdom was healing, but every wound leaves a scar… and every exile, a story unfinished.

To be continued…
